Planning the Website (Part 3)

Welcome to Part 3 of the Website Redesign Series.

This Week's Updates:

  • Planning the Website
  • Creating a Site Outline

Instead of diving right into the design of the site, we need to have a plan! And while this is a rather quick update, it’s important all the same.

My website is fairly simple, but I have probably been overthinking this step since the unorganized feel of my site is what inspired this overhaul to begin with!

Determine WHY people are visiting your site.

For me, it’s usually to read design and business content or hire me for design work.

Key Changes

  • Organized portfolio and services with specific categories.
  • A shop with ebooks, courses & workshops for designers (perhaps more 1:1 mentorship opportunites).
  • Resources page with free downloads and recommended tools.

Website Outline

First, I created a list of the priority pages:

  • Home
  • About
  • Portfolio
  • Services
  • Shop
  • Resources
  • Blog
  • Contact

Then I flushed out by adding sub pages.

  • Home
  • About
  • Portfolio
    •     Brand Identity
    •     Website Design
    •     Graphic/Marketing Design
  • Services
    •     Brand Identity
    •     Website Design
    •     Graphic/Marketing Design (Retainer)
  • Shop
    •     eBooks
    •     Courses
    •     Workshops
  • Resources
    •     Free Downloads
    •     Recommended Tools
  • Blog
  • Contact

Then I organized by header & footer

...keeping in mind that I like to keep the header menu as simple as possible.

HEADER

  • Home {not linked}
  • Portfolio
    •     Brand Identity
    •     Website Design
    •     Graphic/Marketing Design
  • Services

    •     Website Design
    •     Graphic/Marketing Design (Retainer)
  • Shop
    •     eBooks
    •     Courses
    •     Workshops
  • Blog
